I took my Level 14 MM out to solo ettins in his AL 30 armor and just a Minor Death, and it didn't work. The minons insisted on stopping to kill every self-healing Spiny Aloe along the way, and hence I never built up enough momentum. Not having Verata's Sacrifice made it hard to keep them alive after too much time was wasted ...
What did I do wrong? (Yeah, it was just a dry run, given the low level -- but that's the point.)

Is your death otherwise maxed? (ie 12 + 1 + 1)
VS is probably your biggest lack. It makes you army actually able to survive for realistic lengths of time.
Aloes should be 5 sec kills (max) and a free corpse for your army to grow with.

Tried to MM without Veratas Sac and Blood of the Master.
You SHOULD be killing the Spiny Aloes, and the Mergoyles, and the Avicara - that's how you get your army up.(and lynx of course, they're free minions)
Here's a tip - you can cap Veratas Sac from Verata instead of waiting to buy it, and if you're a N/Mo you can use Heal Area to replace BoTM. (even if only for a short while)

Er... since when does Verata ever die?
The last time I saw him was during a Yak's Bend quest where he's a friendly NPC the whole time, even though you're 'chasing' him for murdering people and raising them as undead puppets.
Pretty sure he's the 'nameless' Master of Conditions on the Isle of the Nameless now.
I'd really like to know how you managed to cap anything from Verata, just out of idle curiosity

As for Verata.....
He's down by the Galrath Quest. I tried to cap Verata's Sacrifice from him at least 6 times for myself and other guildies. I posted some pics and my experiences on the sticky at the top of the necro forum on gwonline.net for capping non-elite skills if you are curious.
The bottom line, after over 6 hours of trying to cap it and help others cap it, I found it much easier to get to the copperhammer mines and just buy it. It saved time and the drops were better as I made my way there.
My friend is determined to cap it though. Verata has become his white whale. I think he's spent at least 10 hours trying to kill him.
If I were to need to get Verata's Sacrifice again, here's the methods I'd use:
Method #1
1) Get to Beacon's Perch
2) Get a run to Fort Rankor (or Droks, since Rankor is on the way) or War Camp and skip step 3
3) Get a run to the War Camp or fight your way there with henches (I fought my way there with henches), I found my first green item on the way.
4) Get a run to Copperhammer Mines or fight your way there with henches (I fought my way there with henches)
Method #2 from Droks
1) Go to the Ice Caves and do the mission to arrive at the Iron Mines
2) Get a run or fight your way west with henches to get to Copperhammer (you can cap Virulence on the way)
Method #3, actually kill Verata
All I have are some tips, but if you do manage to kill him, please post the method
Tips:
1) Don't go as a minion master. Verata's "friends" will turn your minions against you.
2) Proceed cautiously. Don't aggro.
3) Bring rangers to set traps and draw smaller groups to you with long bow attacks (I haven't tried this, but I've seen it work in the abbadon's mouth mission)
4) Bring live people. Henches (especially Little Thom) will run ahead and aggro everything even when you don't target.
Good luck!
Here's a picture of the first time I went down there. You can see in the minimap Little Thom running ahead and my fiends attacking groups on the right.
This is only about a third of the enemies and Verata is in the very back on a hill.

Capping Verata's Sacrifice from Verata himself was an interesting experience. 3AM, no guildmates on, and a party full of henchmen. After an hour of doing a graveyard zerg with 60% DP I finally killed the bastard. Can't say it was worth it though after the pain of trying to kill him.

I got lazy, bought Verata's Sacrifice with my more advanced character, and bought it a second time for my MM. Yeah, it's helping a bunch. I haven't tried Ettin Farming with him again, however, since I did it ...
First skill I've ever done that with, actually. Probably the last for a good long time too.

Verata Capping
Well I capped veratas saccer and animate bone friend from verata with my necro.
I had SS on my nec, and he was lvl 15 or so.
Got a full hench party from ToA and departed.
Once I got to the verata cult I had 30% DP or so (..forest minotaurs..)
Once I came at verata cult the rest was easy, from down below I killed about all his minions, then at some point I managed to pull verata himself, killed him and capped my skills.
Guess that works a lot easier then whiping out whole cult o.0
